WITH THE WEATHER’S sudden change for the better, and because he was feeling so good about life, Stark decided he would take a stake-out shift after all. He replaced Harris in the school parking lot at eleven in the morning, and realized his timing had been bad when the students came lurching and swaying and strutting out of the building at lunchtime and all but destroyed his mood.

“Louts.”

A group of them climbed into a battered old Honda at the other end of the lot, and played the radio. Stark’s car vibrated with the thump-thump-thump.

“Mindless. They’re bloody mindless.’’

After school, he followed Blaide home. Eventually, Stark was replaced by Harris in his yellow Volvo. On principle, and just to keep his reputation intact, he called Harris on his cell phone. “The guy’s going to recognize that goddamned car of yours. It stands out like a sore thumb, for God’s sake. Tomorrow, ask Henry to let you have an undercover car. Jesus.”
